Consultations Concluded to Formulate Vision for KPEC - Development Plan
A consultative workshop held in Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, on April 17 and 18, 2024, acknowledging the fundamental role of stakeholders in decision-making process shaping the vision for the Khyber Pass Economic Corridor (KPEC) Development Plan. The diverse array of stakeholders included the district administration of Khyber and Peshawar Districts, officers from the devolved and line departments from these districts, as well as representatives of the national and provincial-level semi-autonomous government entities attended the Event. During the workshop the participants underlined the importance of collaboration in charting the course for regional development in form of Vision for the KPEC Development Plan.
The KPEC Development Plan refers to initiatives aimed at fostering economic growth and development in the region along PTEX and its surroundings districts. National Engineering Services of Pakistan (NESPAK) engaged by the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for Development Plan provided a platform for open dialogue, exchange of ideas, and consensus-building, the consultative workshop facilitated a robust and comprehensive discussion on the multifaceted challenges and opportunities associated with the Khyber Pass Economic Corridor.
"In the context of the Khyber Pass Economic Corridor, the consultative process serves as a cornerstone for building ownership, fostering transparency, and ensuring that the development agenda reflects the aspirations and priorities of all stakeholders” said Mr. Imran Zahoor Khan, Project Director KPEC Project, while welcoming the participants of the consultative workshop.
The consultative workshop provided a platform for stakeholders to voice their concerns, share their expertise, and contribute to the formulation of a visionary blueprint for the Khyber Pass Economic Corridor Development Plan. Through interactive sessions, group discussions, participants had the opportunity to delve into various aspects of corridor development plan, including infrastructure, trade, and tourism including medical tourism, technical education and community empowerment across different sectors.
The participants of the Workshop emphasized optimizing the skill education ecosystem to elevate the skill levels of the local workforce, aligning product processes with global standards for competitiveness. They proposed special measures for infrastructure improvement in key sectors like crushing plants, silk, and marble in Khyber. Private sector involvement was highlighted for inclusive and sustainable development, with suggestions for Public-Private Partnerships. Spatial intervention scenarios were discussed, with a focus on development in the merged area overall, and specifically in Khyber district.
As Khyber Pakhtunkhwa embarks on the journey towards realizing the vision of the Khyber Pass Economic Corridor, the consultative process will continue to serve as a guidance”, iterated by The Project Director (KPEC) and expressed gratitude to all participants and the NESPAK team for their valuable contributions in shaping the economic vision for the Khyber Pass Economic Corridor Plan and assured continued collaboration and support, pledging to incorporate inputs into the plan. The proposed plan aims to unlock economic potential, generate employment, improve living standards, and promote regional stability and prosperity.
